This is a re-post from my old archives. I’ve had a few people ask me rececntly about how I sync my iPhone to Outlook! I’m still using this method and it’s still working well! This was originally posted on March the 7th, 2009.
Because I tend to forget things, recently I’ve ditched my traditional pen and paper diary & started using Outlook on my work PC to organise my entire schedule, not just my work schedule.
I decided I didn’t particularly want to sync my iPhone to my work PC because… (wait for it…) I’m kind of lazy. Well I’m not just kind of lazy. I’m ridiculously lazy. Even if I could be bothered syncing my phone with my work computer, I’m quite likely to forget to actually do so. That said, I need my schedule with me wherever I am. I like knowing where I’m supposed to be and what I’m supposed to be doing.
After mucking around for a bit I finally found a solution! I’ve been using this successfully for a month or so now with no problems, and thought it may be handy to share!
Let me introduce you to “Nadine’s very ad-hoc way of syncing an Outlook Calender to an iPhone”, It requires absolutley no manual intervention and no actually plugging of said iPhone into a computer.
- Step 1: Download Google Calender Sync & install it.
- Step 2: Open it up and put in your Google Account Settings.
- Step 3: You’ll notice there are a few different sync options. I tend to really only edit my calender at work, so I have it set to 1-way: Microsoft Outlook calender to Google Calender. If you like though, you could use the 2 way option to consolidate an Outlook calender with a Google calender if you use both.
- Step 4: Set how often you want it to sync. I have mine syncing every 60 minutes.
- Step 5: Save and minimize the program, it runs in the background on your PC and you can access it by clicking the icon it has placed in your system tray (near the clock). You can right click the icon and any time and select ‘Sync’ to force it to sync immediatley.
Now your Outlook Calender is regularly syncing with Google Calender. Now I know I could just visit Google Calender on my phone, but this way I have access to my calender in places even with no or low signal, which is quite common as I’m with a mobile phone carrier renowed for dodgy reception. It’s now time to get your Google Calender syncing over the air with your iPhone. The easiest way I’ve found to do this is with NuevaSync. Please keep in mind NuevaSync is a beta site, meaning use it with your data at your own risk, neither NuevaSync or myself take any responsibility for data loss.
- Step 6: Register for an account at NuevaSync.
- Step 7: Complete the email verification & login to NuevaSync. It will bring up a ‘Status and Setup’ page. To get started, click change next to the calender option. It will give you the option to select Google or keep it disabled. Pick Google! Follow the on-screen prompts to grant NuevaSync access to your Google Calender. Click continue to return to NuevaSync. Click setup to make sure the calender you want to sync to your iPhone is selected.
- Step 8: NOW BACKUP THE DATA ON YOUR IPHONE. I MEAN IT. THIS WILL POSSIBLY DELETE YOUR CONTACTS, AND MOST DEFINATLEY WILL DELETE YOUR CALENDER. NOTICE HOW I’M WRITING THIS IN CAPSLOCK? IT’S BECAUSE IT’S IMPORTANT!
- Step 9: Grab your iPhone. Follow the instructions here to configure your iPhone appropriatley. I could write the instructions up here for you, but that would be simply re-hasing information and the whole reason I have this set up is because I’m lazy!
- Step 10: It’s done. How handy dandy is that? Apparently NuevaSync also works with Windows Devices, however, I haven’t tried it. If anyone attempts it, let me know! :)

Wow, that seems overly complicated :|
Hehe, kidding :)
I actually don’t use Outlook for Calendaring at all anymore. Just use Google Calendar, and “Google Sync” to sync it to my phone – http://www.google.com/mobile/products/sync.html
I think you can use it with the iPhone too. I basically have it set up to sync both my Contacts and Calendar. I did try the Push Email, but got sick of it after awhile. Prefer manually checking my email since it’s non-critical email anyway.
Google actually now allows you to sync your iPhone directly with their exchange interface, so you can get push email, calendars and contacts. It saves having to use the NuevaSync middle man and Google’s servers seem to be more reliable (for me at least) than NuevaSync’s.
I used to use NuevaSync but switched to Google’s Sync service recently.
Chris! I think I may have to try that. :) Thanks for mentioning it!
Wow. Congratulations on your important share. I find this info useful. I am working as a vendor, I work with Outlook as my email client and with the help of Email Sorter Wizard, an Outlook add-on, I get all my e-mail managed. Take care and keep on blogging.
Thanks a lot! That is a fine contribution.
