So shortly after my post on print based portfolios I go to it and started designing my new folio in InDesign. Early this week I sent it off to Blurb to get it printed and bound into an actual (very shiny & glossy) 36 page book.
It was due to arrive Monday but much to my surprise the FedEx delivery man dropped it off this morning! Blurb did a great job for a very reasonable price ($36.95AUD + shipping). I actually went with Blurb because I could upload a PDF rather than use the “photo books” software that most of these book printing places have as their only option.
I am SO happy with the results. Here’s a few random (dodgy iPhone taken) photos of the finished product! :)

what a wonderful idea! where do you come up with these ideas?
Um. I have a super lovely boyfriend who helps me! :P
hot.
ps this showed up in my rss, so I thin it’s working…
Thanks Phona!!!
I was going to email and ask you, but you saved me the trouble! I switched to Feedburner and thought I’d broken things!! :)
Your book looks fantastic!
I’m putting together a photography book with Blurb, but have never seen the final product. What do you think of the print and paper quality?
(PS: Hello! I’m Elizabeth, and I’ve been reading your blog for the past couple of weeks!)
Helllllo Elizabeth! Lovely to meet you! I’ve been reading your blog for a little while too now! :)
I paid a little more and got the higher quality / premium paper and I think it was definitely worth it! The premium paper stock is a little heavier and I think it looks very professional. Most of my work is ridiculously brightly coloured and the colours worked out really well on that particular stock.
The only thing I’d say is make sure all your images are hi res. A couple of my pieces aren’t and they turned out a little grainy, nothing noticeable on first glance though! :)
Thank you – you’ve made up my mind!
I know I would be disappointed if the colours turned out dull, so it’s worth the extra cost. I’m excited about the thought of seeing my work all bound up in a book – who needs a publishing deal anyway?! :)
Wow that looks so awesome and professional!
Thanks Iris! It’s awesome to hear from you again. I’ve missed you! :)
That seriously looks wonderful. I was going to use them to make a photo year book but I have always been so lazy about starting my project. Yours is making me itch with new ideas. =)
Let us know how different clients like it! A print portfolio seems to be a great advantage when meeting with new people and potential clients.
Aww! I’m glad it’s given you some new ideas. If you have the time you should definitely do yourself a photo year book. It was so much fun to make and it was such a treat when I got it in the mail!
Oh I do hope clients like it. I will let you know how I go with it!
Wow, it looks great from what I can see. Great idea!
Thanks Regina!!! :)
It looks amazing! Your work is great. :)
Aww! Thank you Kaylee! <3
oh coool! looks really nice Nadine!
Thanks Will :)
Looks great!
I once started a book on blurb… momento’s system seems ok too.
BTW – do you use a plug-in for the ‘replies to comments’ – or is that a feature i can activate in WP? :P
Hey K! It’s a plugin called “subscribe to comments.”
w00t! I’m gettin it! Thanks :)
[...] portfolio & resume were due (& consequentially submitted) this morning. I still have a presentation [...]
we do photography AND graphic design and we usually use BLURB as a way to create our photo books, I never really thought of using it for a graphic design portfolio
Right now, for our graphic design portfolio, we are using the Pina Zangaro covers with the removable pages. it does definitely make it easier to take out some of the work you have become tired of and add new pages.. I guess thats the only downfall of using a blurb book.
