I’m thinking of turning nadinerine.com into a blog & portfolio instead of setting up a separate portfolio site. I did twitter about this the other day but I haven’t really come to a definitive decision yet. I’m still considering all the pros & cons. Do any of you guys have any thoughts on the matter?
(And yes, I know this is a lame as excuse for a blog entry!)

Well. For one, even if you have them separate or together you have to be careful for possible future endeavors and know that everyone can read what’s going on. On the other hand, if you don’t care about that. I’d say go for the togetherness.
There’s ups and downs for both options.
If you plan on talking about personal things on this site then I would suggest making a portfolio site separate. You’ll want your portfolio to come off as professional as possible.
I think you should have a totally independant site for portfolio work. Portfolio.nadinerine wouldnt be good, for the reasons of people with half a brain could remore the ‘portfolio’ part and find your blog – which others have pointed out isn’t necessarily a good thing.
Time to start thinking of new domain names :)
Either for a blog or a portfolio site. Unless you’re planning on quitting blogging forever.
It depends on what you mean by “together”
Right now I have my blog and my portfolio kinda together. People can get from one to the other because they are linked together in the navigation, but the designs are completely different. My portfolio website is also not even CLOSE to done (keep getting paid projects that get in the way – not that I am complaining)
Also, I like to have a portfolio site because I would like to use my portfolio site as a way to highlight my web design capabilities. My blog is just a way to chat about things that interest me. Since you are not a web designer (are you?) you don’t really need to show off your web design work, so you dont nessecarily NEED IT..
My suggestion to you is, if you ARE going to put a portfolio right into your blog, i would redesign the blog to really SCREAM your style. I would also work very hard on creating a nice way to display your work instead of just a basic wordpress gallery.
There is nothing wrong with blogging about your professional life – you do have to be careful about what you speak about though. You never want to “vent” about clients.. or talk about how you got wasted over the weekend.. and you really want to be careful even about talking about how stressed you are because it might turn some people off from hiring you for big jobs. Its all a balancing act.
online portfolios are great, but they can be less extensive than a printed on (in my opinion) because you can use the website itself as a portfolio piece. If you don’t know much about websites, i suggest you hire a developer. You can create a mock up in illustrator and a coder can put it into motion for you. This is how I build my websites and it creates for a LOT of flexibility design wise. IF you try and code it first you will get lost in the technical side.
The other problem about blogs when you are a professional is that even if the websites are completely different with a completely unqiue domain name, people will find it. You might have twittered about something on the blog from your personal account, our posted a link to your blog from facebook.. Even linking the two websites together on advertising networks could tip people off.
My suggestion, since you already have an existing blog that seems pretty busy is.. Just link them both and be aware of what you speak about.
If you were starting from scratch, you could easily separate the two by creating separate accounts for everything and never mentioning your REAL name, email address, or other accounts on the blog.. but again, since you have been blogging for a while, you can’t REALLY do that
Thanks you four! I now have lots to think about. :)
You’re already thinking about it but i’ll add something all the same: keep it you twit! We both keep doing this and trying to think of different things to do with our sites- but it would be such a pity to lose so many years of awkwardness!
Think of some creative domain and have your portfolio on its on fancy pants site.
after you make my new layout that is..
I’ll code your shiny new layout after I’m done with Uni. :)
Do whatever makes you happiest, my dear!
